Burgeoning of a Nightmare
The realms of the material and immaterial were separated for reasons that lie beyond the comprehension of mankind, and perhaps even the scope of many of the sentient beings that are scattered across the multiverse. However, this concept was bound to be challenged whenever people felt as if they had some power in their hands; Verity would be living proof of this. Verity was born to a magically-gifted kingdom, a nation, and was held to the confines of a laboratory the moment she was born; the only parental influence she ever received was from her father, a corrupted man hell bent on corroding and destroying the walls that separated the physical realm and the realm of Dreams. That ambition was shared among him and many other high ranking officials of that kingdom, and it was the very reason why Verity was born.
As being a part of key to piercing the barrier between worlds... Verity's brain would be enhanced under a consistent basis, which included being operated upon, monitored, etc, while a machine would be developed to run in tandem with Verity's progress and this would last for years; around the age of 4, she would be constantly tethered to this machine so it could properly extract the dreamy-psychic energy that radiated from her brain in generously copious amounts- stemming from the years of modifications and experiments she had to endure in the name of "evolution." Needless to say that the waves of energy that she emitted during her sleep was nothing short of horrific and far beyond the recommended/standard output of any consciousness, even if they are magical beings. The amount of energy Verity produced was so far beyond the specifications of the mind that her physical vessel would face unprecedented consequences that would only manifest in later years; however for now, the exponentially high output of energy would power a dimension defying "key" that aimed to pierce the fabric of the Dreamscape by using the power of dreams themselves, as dreams always happen in the realm of the Dreamscape. This would be a process that occurred every night for the next foreseeable future.
Ultimately walls of the Dreamscape would be penetrated around the time Verity was 7, in an event that would completely shatter the foundation of the kingdom and ultimately decide Verity's fate; unfortunately the "key" could only scratch the surface of the Dreamscape, but they didn't come out of this empty handed. Even though the machine was destroyed beyond repair, an unknown, yet strangely divine energy seeped into the physical plane in small quantities- this energy would later be known as the Novaia Energy, the basic raw form of Nightmares and negativity that form half of the Dreamscape.
With the raw energy being in the hands of the kingdom now, Verity's usefulness was surprisingly fulfilled but she was not discarded. Instead she was to be enrolled to a institution of magic, to learn how to use her gifts to further strengthen the kingdom. It would by she was enrolled at this institution that she would discover one of the consequences of the experiments she endured many years prior: the inability to mold mana into usable, or even practical applications such as spell casting. This would lead into a less than stellar experience that would culminate to years of disappointment and academic failures. By the time she was 11, it was all bi it confirmed that she would have to live her life as a regular human in a magic world; a sentence she was under the impression that was worse than death. Since she still lived under what most would consider a form of captivity, she had easier access to the laboratory that held her experiments, which also held the now inert Novaia Energy that was harvested and synthesized for various purposes of war. Not that Verity was searching for the energy, but in the middle of one night while guard was exceptionally low, she returned to the laboratory in search of a tool or anything that could help her produce magic more efficiently and effectively; anything that caught the young girl's eye. It was in her presence that the bit of energy came to life in a burst of negativity that illuminated the entire laboratory; it was searching for the "key" the entirety of its stay in the physical realm. This couldn't have been more evident during that night.
The moment it detected her presence it sprung into action, attaching itself to an understandably frightened Verity and merging with her. This piece of energy also held a sliver of the consciousness that was Mirage, the ruler of the Nightmare Realm and the ultimate nightmare that was sealed into the physical realm eons before the time of Verity. Without much resistance, the consciousness easily overpowered the mind that was just an 11 year old child, and began carving a path of nightmarish destruction that involved murdering all involved in the harvesting of the Novaia Energy and using it as a test subject; unfortunately this meant that the entire city where the laboratory was hosted, was in the path of a melancholic destruction. In the span of the entire night, a Mirage possessed Verity would unwillingly commit countless, unspeakable horrors that even involved overpowering capable adult mages whom tried to absorb its energy before it found a host...
There'd be no one left after its rampage; the entire city would be reduced to rubble, leaving only a small, confused girl to withstand the aftermath of destruction she had no idea that was her doing...

• Personality: Verity's personality would range from one extreme to another, thanks to her likeliness being manipulated by the looming darkness that is Mirage. From the moment she was infected with its will, and abilities, its goals woulds slowly permeate through the mind; she would be persuaded to assume arts and knowledge that she would have otherwise left alone. On the surface Verity's thirst for knowledge, her purely logical way of thinking, her no-nonsense attitude, and her belief of universal fairness would leave others to believe that she is of noble cause... while in reality her goals simply stem from the growing mass of darkness within her heart, that she has little idea about on the surface. Verity once was able to cherish her friendships with others, and definitely held family values to a high degree... especially due to the nature of her upbringing, but by the time she she was an adult, this value was little more than a distant memory, as by then the only thing she truly sought for was the location of the prison that contained the inter-dimensional calamity that was Mirage.
Over the years between her adolescence and her adulthood, she was at first gleaming with positivity. Her adopted family instilled within her many values that she truly wanted to carry forward with her... like the typical not backing down to a challenge and to make bad out of a good situation. She was often gullible and easy to manipulate which would only make a grim for herself, especially when combined with her awkwardness that stemmed from her somewhat sheltered childhood. Nevertheless she was a headstrong girl, forever determined to find an answer to any riddle that plagued her; she was not one to take "impossible" for an answer... even if that meant her habitually repeating the same mundane tasks that only ended in failure, just to change one variable to find a positive result. Needless to say she was not efficient at reaching her goals, and would rather challenge obstacles by using a full force approach, often limiting her to focusing on one issue at a time. She possessed a devilish curiosity that would often get her into trouble, such as when she stayed behind after class, against the wishes of every scholar, to craft a potion to prank her brother at a later time; she only succeeded in filling the entire institution with gargantuan-sized bubbles that explode like fireworks when popped. She also valued her siblings, and had a close relationship with her brother, Samuel. Her relationship with her sibling was so valuable to her that would try to protect him in battle, a subject that she was known to be poor in. Due to her less than stellar performance in the battlefield, she actually hated fighting; it was something that frightened her, not only from the aspect of losing but from the aspect of causing someone unnecessary harm, which was likely a form of post traumatic stress disorder ranging from her childhood. It would be easy to say that she feared using magical force; the moment she used magic, the results were bound to be negative, ranging from completely failing, to being ridiculed, to actually succeeding but to the safety of someone else. Her curiosity only once led her to willingly call forth her dark energies, with the results demoralizing her and vowing to only fight for the right causes. Her abstention of combat would slowly fade each time she relied on the use of the darkness that was nightmares; with every use, her will would slowly succumb; her body would slowly submit; and her heart would slowly darken until one could see a stark change in personality from her prior beliefs.
With Mirage's influence supporting her, secrets and hidden ideologies surfaced that only showcased her twisted ideas and unique aptitude for battle, such as her use of Novaia Energy to circumvent the handicap that was her inability to convert mana into a usable form of spell-art by having the energy subjugate her own energies, which would allow the infinite potential of the Nova Energy to control the mana in her body, giving form and direction to her otherwise useless techniques. Needless to say using this concept alone, she would be able to overcome virtually all limitations of mana and become an extremely dangerous opponent in battle. However her ingenuity didn't end there; it was almost as if this was the true version of Verity all along. With the continued usage of the Nova Energy, and time, Verity's warm demeanor grew cold; the smiles on her face would slowly descend to scowls and apathetic expressions; her previous ideologies of cherishing the importance of life and values would fade into the oblivion that was absolute darkness. Her generally inefficient dispositions would slowly become direct, calculated, precise, meticulous, and frightening. Instead of challenging obstacles head-on, she calculated the precise ways to prevail over them... or to flat out circumvent them in order to spare herself both time and effort; these were only some of the concepts in-which she started to regard as important. With Mirage's unnatural interference, other symbols of representation prospered, such as: her absolute value of holding knowledge above all else; maintaining an open mind and objective standpoint, etc. The frightening aspect of this materializes when her objective, calm mindset is met with her rather apathetic temperament. In an ironic contrast to her upbringing, Mirage's influence provoked a superiority complex within Verity, which was likely because of the sophisticated and comprehensive wisdom that Mirage shared with its host; this was exemplified when she subjugated someone's consciousness in order to exploit their knowledge.
Even while acting under Mirage's direct influence, Verity wouldn't be against creating temporary partnerships, as long they provided some type of benefit towards her overall goal; she would act as required to maintain an amicable relationship between all parties without discarding her core values. These are all examples of how goal-oriented and confident she was persuaded to feel about herself under Mirage's influence. She would also be described as cold and calculating, and not afraid to capitalize on any shortcomings presented to her by acquaintances and foes alike; this would also reflect in battles but the paltry light that was Verity's own will would often keep her from accomplishing irreversible immoral tasks. However, even with the moral ambiguity that she often portrayed, "evil" couldn't be a word used to describe her; there are only a few circumstances in which she would go out of her way to bring conflict to another, unless it was for the progression of her goals. She evolved to be ruthless in combat, often opting to overpower her opponent in combat as well as dishearten them by showcasing her refined prowess. The word that was, and still is, best used to describe her was "heartless".
