Technological advancements and Artificial Intelligence beaconed a new era in humankind’s history. Through the ages passed humanity had strived to ascend to more than their mediocrity. Often at the behest of wartime destruction. First it was armament and external enhancements followed by a long progression of increasingly transformative and profitable advancements. Cybernetics and robotic features became a standard as people transcended their mediocrity and purity to become an amalgamation and machine. No longer was human development placed solely upon the person. Features and attributes could now be purchased beyond the cosmetic. Stronger appendages, better eyesight, cloaking. It all came into play. Humanity was no longer just flesh and bone and it was all fed by the bloody money of war. Artificial humanoids given artificial intelligence were created to fight alongside and for mankind. Androids. Epochs rose and fall as humanity sold their purity for perfectionism. It would take an age but soon the basic composition of humanity would be broken open. The architecture of God’s favourite creation laid bare for their own eyes to see, modify and sell.
It was no longer necessary for humanity to be dependent on technology alone. From beyond birth genetics could be modified. At first it was arbitrary decisions. Eye colour, hair colour, complexion and the assuredness that the generations of tomorrow would be free from disease and disability. At least that is what the masses believed. Behind closed door the super soldiers of tomorrow were creation. Embryo’s genetically modified and spliced with the DNA of other creatures and alien species. Forced evolution at the hands of war hungry capitalistic pigs. Children born with stronger skin, faster reflexes, endurance and rejuvenation factor trained to be specialists in wars fought for country, planet and corporations.
Like all corporate secrets, they have a price that will always see purchase. Corporations and governments fed to the wolves via espionage. It was not long before widespread adoption of ‘designer mutations’ became the standard. Along side natural breeding selection and mutations Uberhumans had been born. The age of fear of mutations had begun and Uberhumans were forced to the destroyed and darkened underbelly hive cities of the human territories. A line had been crossed in the meddling with the creations of God.
For profit, power or protection humanities greed and fear of the unknown would create an entirely new class of humankind. The Realians were born. By their creators they are humanity perfected, to humanity they are horrifying monstrosities with no right to be a part of society. Immortal, perfected flesh and completely designer these created were for those that wanted the ultimate designer child. The perfect amalgamation between cybernetics and biogenetics. A scientific marvel and masterpiece that was treated second rate. Not cybernetic enough to be considered android, not human enough to be considered part of humanity – all abomination. Even now the racist divide between humanity had grown.
Throughout all of such creation the conglomerate of Babel had stood stalwart in the shadows. The rumoured illuminati created to protect humanity from its downfall was all but smoke, mirrors and red string attached to articles on conspiracy theorist’s walls. None could prove its existence and those that could found eternal silence. Corporations were kept in check; militaries were well funded and political leaders were won purely by the might of Babel. Everything in humanity’s history had been at the hands of two entities. Babel and The Church of U-DO. The sword and shield of humanity.
“Identification Number: XVS00696 has finished genetic splicing.” A modulated female voice permeated the vibrant sterile white lab filled with orange and blue holographic screens. “Artificial womb operation 100%” The voice continued before falling silent. An elderly man of dark skin processed the data of XVS00696 quietly before turning his head towards another male above in a viewing room shrouded in shadow. “Doctor, everything went perfectly. Absorption of artificial DNA and genetic splicing at 100%. Growth rate, normal.” The voice crackled through an intercom speaker into that shrouded room to which the doctor above turned his back to the large overlooking window and began to walk out. “Call the parents, ensure they will be ready for delivery.” Was the only order that came through. The voice was rough, worn and affirmative.
“Doctor, XVS00696 has developed an abnormality. It appears that the child has begun to develop ruby crystalline horns atop her head. At current measurement they are approximately two inches tall” Came the strong female voice of Cordelia Cordellion. Head scientist overlooking the latest developments as she stood in a plain boardroom with a black desk with black chairs. Before her stood a faceless hologram, their modulated voice returning the conversation. “Do they appear to be detrimental to the child’s health?” The question stumped Cordelia leaving her confused for a moment before shaking her head. “No, it seems to be a purely cosmetic alteration due to the change in process you created.” After a moment the modulated voice spoke again. “Continue to watch her growth, it is within acceptable parameters. Should anything change, proceed to termination.” Before Cordelia could speak a shocked response, the transmission was cut, and she was left alone in silence. A groan of annoyance broke through her velvet red covered lips as she removed her black rimmed glasses from her face and ran her left hand across her visage. “Easy for you to say.” She muttered as she turned to walk out.
“Cordelia, Mr and Mrs Grey are here!” A male voice called with a youthful vigour from across the open garden space where Cordelia was sat overwatching playing children. All dressed in the same pristine white uniform with their unique identifier on the left breast and across the shoulders on the back. Looking up Cordelia smiled softly at her latest intern Timothy. He was a cheerful kid with a good heart and an intelligent mind. The brown-haired male had freckles and beautiful auburn eyes that were gentle. “Thank you, please show them to meeting room one. I will bring XVS00696 to them shortly.” Timothy nodded and ran off to grab the parents. Cordelia looked about and smiled softly as she walked towards a child with ruby horns, sage eyes and pink hair. “Come here, child. You’re possibly going home today.” She said softly and begun to carry her away from the remaining children. This would be the last time she saw them.
As part of Babel’s program all children were given to vetted parents to be nurtured and given a loving family. To learn entirely what it is to be human, to understand what it is they are to protect. As such each set of parents were vetted and paired with a child. That child would then become their sole custody until the individual child was chosen for selection and training. The Grey’s were an upstanding high-class family with a secure home and jobs. Evelyn Grey in her early thirties was a member of a subsidiary of Babel’s board of executives and Winston in his late twenties was a Diplomat. Both had desired to be parents but were unable to conceive naturally and were approached by Babel to enter this program. Electing to parent only one child, they were accepted. Lead to a room of bright colours and scenes painted upon walls and toys everywhere they were sat at a table and left to wait. “I hope they are beautiful Winny!” Evelyn whispered nervously. “Of course, they will be Eve.” He responded, his nervousness betraying his tone. They didn’t need to worry.
It was love at first sight when Cordelia came in cradling a child barely older than one but had the control and alertness of a toddler with fluorescent pink hair, beautiful round sage coloured eyes and unique ruby horns. A soft gasp was all that left Evelyn’s mouth as she reached out to take the child which began to fuss. “Oh Winny, she’s beautiful.” Evelyn cooed softly as she swaddled the child, who at first began to fuss but rapidly settled down and eventually fell asleep. Winston who watched had softened facial features before he reached with a hand and touched the child’s cheek gently with his thumb. “It feels exactly like skin.” He whispered. “She’s beautiful.” He continued before looking towards Cordelia who waited before speaking. “She does not have a name, that is of course up to you two to decide, of course this is your last chance to decli—” Cordelia was interrupted by Evelyn who had spoken out loud. “Eden, her name is Eden. Like from the bible. The Garden of Eden. She is our endless possibilities and everything we want.” Cordelia closed her mouth and for once smiled.
A lollipop hung in her mouth as she sat atop her playground castle, sage eyes looking out over towards the city before turning towards the sky. Eden’s legs swung rhythmically back and forth as she sat on the edge of the wooden roof in quiet contemplation. Tomorrow she was leaving her home, her parents for training. She’d been off world three times prior for testing of course. Always to ISPV9, a space station in the upper atmosphere. Tomorrow was different of course; she was to be gone for four years and without her parents. People she loved and cherished. There was sadness and worry in her heart mixed with nervousness, even if she wasn’t sure why she felt these things. Her beyond genius intellect and metal disciplines had already removed the mystery. It was what she was born for. Her parents had told her from the very start that this day would come which is why they filled every day with as much love and compassion as possible. She would return to them of course, once she graduated her training for a few months but then she would be given a classification, a rank and a position and would begin to work.
Soft footsteps reached her ears and through their gait she was able to tell without looking that it was her father. He’d come out looking for her. “Hello Papa!” She said joyously, wide smile upon her lips. Her father, glass of drink in hand smiled back. His face had aged quite a bit since her younger days, but it was filled with ‘love wrinkles from smiling so much’ as he told her. “Hey little one, time to come inside and eat dinner.” “In a minute Papa.” Eden responded as she continued her staring in the sky as it rapidly begun to grow darker. “I want to see the stars Papa.” Silently, Winston stood against her castle and watched the sky. “Okay little one. We can watch the stars for a bit but then we have to go inside. Mama has cooked all your favourite foods!” With a gasp Eden responded. “All of them?” “All of them.” Winston responded affirmatively with a nod. Turning his attention to the sky, he watched the world darken and millions of twinkling stars take the place of the once blue sky. After a few more minutes Evelyn stood at the back door and called to the both of them. “Dinner is ready! Come wash your hands!” “We better go, we don’t wanna get in trouble!” Winston said with a smile. “Papa! No, we don’t!” Eden said as she was lifted down by Winston and they headed back inside. For their last family dinner before Eden’s training.
Of all the children created by Babel only five of them passed through to training. Those five were trained in all fields of Babel from military warfare to diplomacy and espionage. No field was left untouched. Each of those five gifted were trained with their unique abilities. Each progressed in their own time. Hardened, battle worn and ready. Eden however was the favourite of the four. She excelled far more rapidly than the other four. One by one as the years progressed, they were left behind her until she was the only one taking advanced training. Throughout her training there was always a black spectre watching from the viewing rooms. Cloaked in shadows, he ensured she constantly progressed. For her growth confirmed that she would be the final key to his end goal. She would be his perfect weapon. The sharpest blade to ensure victory.
It was apparent through training that Eden had discovered unique abilities that far exceeded the assumptions of her teachers. Hardened veterans fell to her combat prowess and the unique ability declared as ‘The Vault.’ Her masterful control over the ARCUS system and the Aether were off the charts for someone so young. Eden was a protégé for the Realian program.
On the fourth year of training, she graduated her training at the highest honours across all subjects. Her only pitfall was the unique formation of her personality. Which many lecturers, professors and martial arts masters found irritating but easy to curb and bring to focus. Due to her unique skillset she was placed in the Intelligence and Espionage division under secretive commander
"She is perfect, the first contact has been created. With pink hair and sage eyes."
